Science at Beaumont
Children are taught a range of scientific knowledge through the Kent scheme units of work. Children learn through practical investigation, questioning and discussion in line with the national curriculum.
In EYFS children's natural curiosity in the diverse world around them begins their science learning at Beaumont. Through the early years goal 'understanding the world' children are able to use practical experiences and conversations to extend their vocabulary and enrich their knowledge and understanding. Children enjoy exploring animal habitats, including sea life, birds and minibeasts, weather and the seasons and a range of materials.
In key stage 1 pupils are encouraged to experience and observe the natural and humanly-constructed world around them. Through the Kent scheme children are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice. They are helped to develop their understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of scientific enquiry to answer their own questions, including observing changes over a period of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple comparative tests, and finding things out using secondary sources of information. They are taught to use simple scientific language to talk about what they have found out and communicate their ideas to others.
In Key stage 2 at Beaumont pupils build on previous knowledge by using scientific language, first, to talk about and, later, to write about what they have found out. They progress through exploring and talking about their ideas; asking their own questions about scientific phenomena; and analysing functions, relationships and interactions more systematically.

Colchester Zoo Trip
We have been learning about mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish and invertebrates in year 1 science this term. Our trip to the zoo included a fantastic hands on workshop where we put all our learning to the test! Our year 1 children showed off their knowledge and sorting skills and impressed the zookeeper, who was amazed at how much they could tell him.
We had a wonderful time and hope you enjoy looking at our photos from the day.
Science Museum Trip
Foxes (year 3) and Badgers (year 4) Classes enjoyed a trip to the London Science Museum!
